ROMAN MINIATURE OBJECT

A miniature copper-alloy axe of probable 2nd to 4th century AD date (I.M. Stead and V. Rigby; 1986; p.136). The object is three-dimensional, with a rounded "cutting edge", concave underside and damaged top and back edges. It appears to have been cast in a two piece mould and the construction and overall form of this piece are identical to a previously recorded example from the same field - see BH-E4E401. These pieces are clearly not functional items and a symbolic use must be assumed. The surface has a dark green patina.It measures 19.4mm long by 23.7mm high and 10mm thick. The weight is 9.88g.
