The Portable Antiquities Scheme

A silver hammered groat of Elizabeth I (1558-1603).  With a cross crosslet mint mark to the obverse, the coin is from the second issue dating 1560-61. The obverse has portrait bust left and unusually, a clear pellet on the lower jaw line, above the collar. The reverse has the square-topped shield on long cross fourchée.The surface has some mild eruptions and a dark blotchy grey/brown patina.
