This is one of the earliest known photographs of Mont Beuvray, taken at a time when archaeological excavations of the oppidum of Bibracte were still poorly documented through photography. It provides evidence of the landscape in the 19th century, then characterized by large open areas. The view towards Mont Préneley shows slopes that were once widely cultivated and are now largely forested. The open foreground is typical of the upland grazing areas of the Morvan, used as occasional pasture and maintained in a relatively simple manner.
