Charlotte Queen of Great Britain

McArdell, James · 1761

Chester Beatty

Mezzotint portrait on paper of Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), Queen of Great Britain and wife of King George III, engraved by James MacArdell (1729-1765) and published in London in 1761. In another version by McArdell she wears a four-strand jewelled necklace without lace collar and different earrings; her hair is also stylist differently. It is probably a companion to a portrait of George III, both issued in the year they were married and both presumably after paintings by Jeremiah Meyer (1735-1789). For a comment on McArdell see Wep 4178.12.
