Scroll of 'Tale of Princess Ejima' (Ejima monogatari) the text accompanied by illustrations painted in ink, colours and gold on paper; made in Japan in the mid-17th century. This single scroll was probably once one of a pair. It tells the story of Princess Ejima and her mother, the renowned warrior Lady Hangaku. In the story, both Princess Ejima and Hangaku fight valiantly against the warrior Shinkai Kōshirō, who had killed Hangaku's husband.
