Engraving on paper of the Beheading of John the Baptist, engraved and published by Jan Sadeler (1550-1600) after a design by Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) probably in Cologne c. 1585. Latin text inscribed below is based on Matthew 14.9-11. An executioner places the saint’s head on a platter held by Salome; blood gushes from the decapitated body in the foreground; another prisoner sits chained to the wall of the cell. In the background, she presents it to her mother, Herodias and King Herod.
