Mud cloth

This mud cloth is made for the tourist market and is an image from daily life. The cloth is painted in a family context. The weaving of the bands for the cloth may have been made elsewhere. The weaving width is 13,5 cm. The threads of the weave are Z-spun, the weave is 15 threads in the warp and 11 threads in the weft and are beige in colour. The stitching threads are S,,2z spun by machine and double used (see M6-52). The image is a painting of the city of Djenne with boats in the foreground. On a city building the (probably French) flag flies. On a boat there are several poles. The shape is interesting because it resembles a traditional bogolan-finish motif. The whole is framed with a black line and has a slightly more elaborate corner decoration.
