Little is known about the use of the shoulder cloth. Only Adriani and Kruyt (1951: 281) mention the shoulder cloth in one of their books. However, this shoulder cloth also falls under the category of sarongs. Because the shoulder cloths are decorated, we may assume that these cloths were used for festive occasions. Clothing used in daily life is usually not painted.\In view of the fact that women and priests are responsible for the production of tree bark, we can assume that the shoulder cloths are also made by them. The decorations were made by painting the cloth, but motifs were also applied using stamps.\With the introduction of woven cloths, among other things, tree bark clothing fell into disuse. Decorated tree bark clothing was still worn at ceremonies in the early twentieth century.
