Nocales, Chile: Earthquake victims prepare to evacuate their home, damaged 3/28 when a "catastrophic" earthquake devastated much of central Chile. More than 200 persons were feared dead and hundreds more injured in the earthquake which lasted one minute.

Sap on Tap in the Sugar Bush-It's maple syrup time again in Vermont. The harvest is a little skimpier than usual but just as sweet. Bearded farmer at top left shows how sap is collected from maple grove or "sugar bush." Oxen (top, center) still pull the syrup tanks in many Vermont farms. Gladys and Harriet Olmstead of So. Royalston, Vt. (top right) take a sample while gathering sap. The fresh sap flows into feeder tanks in the sugar house (lower left) where it is evaporated into syrup.
