Peat core sampling in the Port des Lamberts bog (Glux-en-Glenne, Burgundy, France)

This composite photograph documents the extraction of a peat core from the Port des Lamberts bog, near the archaeological site of the oppidum of Bibracte. Peat forms a natural archive of the landscape, where pollen is deposited and preserved in low-oxygen conditions. Its analysis makes it possible to reconstruct the evolution of vegetation and human activities over several millennia. The study of this core has notably revealed significant deforestation in the area at the end of the Iron Age, linked to the development of agriculture.
