The subtitles to this lithograph were supplied by Daumier, which was quite unusual. The print shows lack of appreciation of the general public towards "modern art". The lithograph shows a "progressive" artist who is trying in vain to convince a spectator to at least have a look at one of Courbet's paintings. But the conservative visitor shows no interest and rather looks backwards towards the paintings of the classical romantic school, which he can understand. During the Salon of 1865, Courbet exhibited two of his famous paintings of the new realism: "Portrait de Proudhon en 1853" and "Entrée de la Vallée du Puits-Noir".
