POST MEDIEVAL THIMBLE

A copper alloy thimble dating from the 17th century. It is tall and slightly squashed. The pits are arranged is horizontal rows. It is not clear how the thimble was made. It is of sheet metal but there is no visible seam, nor does it have the characteristics of stamping or deep drawing. It is presumbed that it is brazed, but very well so the seam does not show. The top of the thimble is depressed significantly and seems to be a separate piece of copper alloy. This may suggest the the thimble is a Dutch Type One thimble, which were brazed and made in two pieces. The pits are circular and hand made. Cf Holmes 1993.
