James C. Edgerton was an army lieutenant and pilot who helped get America's airmail service off the ground. Edgerton was one of a group of army air corps pilots who flew the mail for the Post Office Department from May 18 - August 8, 1918. On the first day of the service Edgerton flew from the mail from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Washington, DC. This photograph shows Lt. Edgerton posed in front of his Curtiss JN-4H "Jenny" mail airplane with his younger sister.
