POST MEDIEVAL WEIGHT

A copper alloy coin weight dating to the period 1620 to 1632. The weight represents a gold unite which was the equivalent of 22 shillings. The weight is rectangular in shape and section. On the obverse within a beaded circular border is a portrait of James I facing right, wearing armour and holding an orb and sceptre. A circumferential legend reads 'I R BRIT'. On the reverse of the weight is a crowned XXII within a circular border. The weight bears an official counterstamp in the left upper corner comprising a crowned 'I'. The weight weighs 10g.
