A heavily worn and chipped sestertius of Commodus and dating 180-192 AD. Reece period 9, mint of Rome. Reverse; HERCVLI ROMANO AVG SC, Hercules standing left laying right hand on trophy and holding club with lion skin in left hand. For reverse type, see RIC III, p. 439, no. 640. This reverse belongs to the very end of Commodus reign but on the obverse is an early portrait. This suggests that the coin is either an unlisted variant or a cast copy made out of two different official coins.The coin is so eroded that it now appears rectangular in plan view, and demonstrates an uneven green patina.
