Treasure Number: 2006 T447. Post Medieval gold mourning ring dated to 1674. The band is simple, with a small engraving of a skull on the exterior. The interior is inscribed in lower case script: 'E : Kinsman obijt 28 Maij 74. o. y. en', with maker's mark GW in a rectangular shield. The hoop has an external diameter of 17.31mm, an internal diameter of 14.65mm, is 3.48mm wide, 1.11mm thick and weighs 2.51g.This is a characteristic type of the period, though the spelling of 'obijt' and Maij' is unusual, and the interpretation of the letters that appear after the date is unclear. The maker's mark does not appear in Grimwade.Report from J. Rudoe, The British Museum
