MEDIEVAL HARNESS PENDANT

Incomplete medieval gilt copper alloy, approximately circular openwork object, probably a harness pendant. The probably foliar ornament picked out by the asymmetrical openwork is augmented by engrave lines on the front face. Part of the edge is missing, and there has been some distortion. There are no extant means of attachment. Though no close parallel has been noted it is clear that this belongs to a well recognised series of 12th-century gilt harness pendants and mounts decorated with plant motifs in openwork and engraving. Diameter c.36mm. Thickness 1.5 - 2.5mm.
