A fragment from a copper alloy Roman brooch probably Aesica type dating to AD 43-100.fragment comprises a section of the foot of the brooch. The fragment would have been triangular and is now a crescent with one surviving projection with a knopped terminal, the opposite terminal is missing. above the catchplate the remainder of the brooch is missing. On the back of the foot, is a section of the catchplate which is perpendicular to the foot. The front of the foot is decorated in the centre with a circle which appears to contain a cross. From the cross two lines extend in a narrow crescent towards the knop. Above and below the crescent shaped engraving there are small dots. There are three holes or deep indentations placed assymetrically across the crescent shaped engraving.The fragment is 44.94mm long, 17.13mm wide, 13.16mm in height (including the height of the catchplate) and 2.21mm thick. It weighs 9.91g.The brooch foot bears similarities to Roman Aesica brooches yet the decoration although worn suggests a later date perhaps should be considered.
