Mat stamped BEARD PATENTEE Wharton-style case

Lower half only of case, breaking apart and glass loose within it. Fragile. There is a complex design based on an oval on the reverse of the case, of which the leather is stained and worn.

Francis Joseph Baigent, born in Winchester, Hampshire, England on 14 Jun 1830 to Richard Baigent and Louisa Croome (source http://records.ancestry.co.uk/francis_joseph_baigent_records.ashx?pid=127989483 ) See also 69_5 which may have been taken at the same sitting. If so the plate would date from 1854.

Separated into two parts.

Hand coloured three-quarter length of a seated woman. The chair back is upholstered. She wears a pleated, long sleeve dress, with frill collars and blouse front. Brooch at her neck. Her hair is worn up in a middle parting. To her left is a table covered with a tablecloth which she rests her left elbow on. Her right hand rests in her lap, clasping the left hand. Plain background.
