In 1984, when archaeological excavations resumed at the oppidum of Bibracte, the remains of the Rebout gate (first explored in 1867–1868) were hidden beneath dense vegetation, behind a line of twisted trees marking the remains of an old hedgerow that once bordered the hollow path leading to the summit of Mont Beuvray. Following renewed investigation, the elevation of the rampart was reconstructed to mark the entrance to the ancient city and restore the original width of the road passing through the gate, approximately twenty metres.
