500
Incomplete cast copper alloy radiate-headed brooch of Early Early-Medieval date (AD 500 - AD 600). Length 22mm, width 18.5mm, thickness of plate 1.2mm. Weight 2.65g.The piece is the head-plate and part of the bow of a miniature form of radiate-headed brooch. When complete it would have had a triangular-shaped foot. The flat undecorated head-plate is semi-circular in plan and has a small projection with a rounded end at each lower corner. There is a double knop at the apex. The bow is flat on the rear face and the front face has a central longitudinal arris forming a sub-triangular shape in cross-section. The break on the bow is old. The rear face of the plate is flat and has the remains of a single pin bar lug which is about 5mm in length. There is an even mid-green patina overall and there is no trace of gilding, tinning, burning or melting.
