An advertisement from the  West Ender Magazine  for Don Bergland’s solo exhibition at McEwen Fine Arts Gallery in Vancouver, BC. The show ran from March 3-16, 1981.  In 1981, Bergland was living in Hagensborg, BC in the Bella Coola valley. He had resigned his teaching position with the school district in June, 1980, and was devoting himself entirely to the development of his artwork and the production of paintings for exhibition. To this point, he had been working on an abstract design series using acrylic on paper, but in September, 1980, he started exploring a large mythic-oriented series painted on canvas. He called this series of work, “Mytheosis.” Alongside this new direction, he started to develop a landscape style using acrylic paint on paper. These became the prototypes of the Exile style series which would dominate his exhibiting career for the next 16 years. Both these landscapes and the Mytheosis series appeared in this McEwen exhibition.
