The 'Seven Patriarchs' (Shichi kōsō) were chosen by Shinran, founder of the Jōdo Shinshū sect. The seven include Buddhist figures from India (Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu), China (Tanluan, Daochuo and Shandao) and Japan (Genshin and Honen) whose teachings Shinran felt were essential to the deliverance of the nembutsu practice of chanting of the name of Amida Buddha. Hanging scroll paintings depicting the Seven Patriarchs are displayed in Jōdo Shinshū temples near the temple's principal image.
