Woodblock print with hand-applied colour, Princess Shikishi and Nowake visit Fujiwara Teika at Ogura by Nishimura Shigenaga, published by Igaya Kan'emon in Edo (modern Tokyo), Japan, between 1716 and 1736. Hosoban format, urushi-e print. This kind of hand-coloured woodblock print is known as an urushi-e or 'lacquer picture', so named for the glossy black finish achieved by applying animal glue to areas of black ink.
