Woodblock print with hand-applied colour of actors Ichikawa Monnosuke I as Fukakusa no shōshō and Arashi Wakano I as Ono no Komachi by Okumura Toshinobu, published by Sōshūya in Japan, probably between 1723 and 1725. Hosoban format, urushi-e print. This kind of hand-coloured woodblock print is known as an urushi-e or 'lacquer picture', so named for the glossy black finish achieved by applying animal glue to areas of black ink.
