Chester Beatty

Mezzotint portrait on paper of Jane Myddelton (née Needham) (1645-1692), engraved by James McArdell (1729-1765) in London between 1740 and 1765; lettered state before Fisher’s address was added. It is a copy of a painting by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) now with the Royal Collections Trust (RCIN 401211). The painting is one of ‘Windsor Beauties’, a set of eleven portraits commissioned (or assembled) by Anne Hyde (1637-1671), Duchess of York. Jane is perhaps depicted here as Pomona, goddess of fruitful abundance. For a comment on McArdell see Wep 4178.12.
