Suspected shoplifter beat her as crowd watched

Philadelphia -- Viola Smith, 49-year-old store detective, rests in her Philadelphia apartment after treatment in a hospital for eye, arm and leg injuries suffered when she was attacked by a suspected shoplifter. Miss Smith said the suspect, a tall slender women in her late teens or early twenties, accompanied by two children, beat and kicked her while a crowd stood in a circle and watched.
