Payoff made on speed -- Joe Gordon, Yankee shortstop, was champing at the bit on first base when Babe Dahlgren slammed a fast ground ball past third base into left field in the fifth inning of the first game of the World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees at New York, Oct. 4. Wally Berger handled the ball for the Reds, and instead of throwing to Ernie Lombardi to prevent a score, he threw to Lonnie [i.e., Lonny] Frey at second base to hold Dahlgren at first. But Gordon crossed up the defense and scampered around third for home for the first Yankee score.
