Miami: hurricane Inez, its 100-miles-per-hour winds spreading death in the Caribbean, crept close to Cuba's south coast and the sprawling U.S. naval base at Guantanamo 9/30 and promised to gain back some of the strength it lost in the Haitian mountains. Winds of 70 mph or over, heavy rains, and swollen tides threatened the Cuban coast. Not far behind one a westerly course was tropical storm Judith, poorly organized but packing peak winds of 45 mph (see bottom map).
