For he is Alfred Sande, 13 years old, the adopted son of Earl Sande, the famous jockey of other years. Furthermore, he is the son of the late Clarence Kummer, another famous jockey, whose widow Sande married. The youngster is saluting Cadet Officer Joseph Smolik.

Living with a Fault. Unofficial earthquake capital of the U.S. is Hollister Calif. -- population 6,500 -- 100 miles Southeast of San Francisco. The Hayward earthquake fault slices through it, creeping at the rate of a half inch a year and threatening a possible major earthquake soon or some time before the year 2,000. But Hollister residents walk their shifting sidewalks -- as here, and seem little concerned about other evidences of the threat.
