Living with a Fault. Unofficial earthquake capital of the U.S. is Hollister Calif. -- population 6,500 -- 100 miles Southeast of San Francisco. The Hayward earthquake fault slices through it, creeping at the rate of a half inch a year and threatening a possible major earthquake soon or some time before the year 2,000. But Hollister residents walk their shifting sidewalks -- as here, and seem little concerned about other evidences of the threat.
