Wegener, Gerda · 1914
Engraving on paper, hand-coloured with stencils (pochoir), of a woman in a dressing gown by Gerda Wegener (1886-1940); plate 182 from issue 78 of the 'Journal des Dames et des Modes' fashion magazine published in Paris on 20 July 1914. The magazine was issued thrice-monthly between June 1912 and August 1914 (the outbreak of WWI). The image illustrates a woman with short black bob in a yellow, white and blue stripped dressing gown standing beside and looking at a large blue and yellow macaw chained to a bird stand. Designed and signed by Danish artist Gerda Wegener, a highly sought-after portrait painter and one of the leading fashion illustrators of women’s haute couture in the Art Deco style.
