Describes Breakout Attempt--Associate Warden W.D. Achuff, center, tells newsmen of the hacksaw blade used by death row inmates to saw bars and escape from their cells during the night at San Quentin Prison. The six condemned killers who attempted the break held two guards, C.L. Deatrick and Sgt. R.R. Kardell as hostages. The two guards are in serious condition from head wounds, the convicts inflicted with pipes. The convicts have been returned to their cells. At right is Associate Warden Dale B. Frady.
