The Universal Gesture in Boston yesterday was the oh-my-aching-head motion. this was not because of an aspirin shortage, but because of a high wind that blew throughout the day. Each of the woman above has her own way of handling the situation (the lady on the right is a damn-the-torpedoes type); but the hatless girl in the center who, after all, has the least to lose, took it with a grin. Biting breezes were tempered by the bounty of a blue and sunny sky and the promise of warmer days offset the sting in the wind. Greater Boston in general took the weather with a sense of relief that what has been called winter's last gasp bypassed this region almost completely.

Hands in the New Deal. These are the hands through which pass millions of Uncle Sam's dollars. They belong to Harry Hopkins, Federal emergency Relief Administrator, and are long and lean like himself. Hopkins's most effective and characteristic gesture is a sort of graceful edition of the Bowery tough's side hand pass. The Administrator ends this gesture with a thumb jerk back over his shoulder to indicate Congress, the President of the state of the country in general.
