Ancient Lighthouse Weathers Hurricane-Battered by wave and wind and surrounded by wreckage, the 99-year-old lighthouse here burned on defiantly throughout the hurricane that raked the Gulf Coast last week. A dredge-line, swept ashore from nearby Deer Island, was left almost at its base. The great beacon was the only ship warning light in this area to remain in operation during the storm, the coastguard said.
