The achievement of textures in this lithograph is a notable one among these proofs. The white Georgian preaching the gospel to the negroes is a satire on hypocrisy. -GB The futility of forcing questionable religious values upon Negro convicts, society's victims, is the subject of this powerful and biting commentary. Of Bellows' many contributions to "The Masses," this composition that appeared in the May 1917 issue perhaps best reflects the editorial viewpoint of the radical magazine. (Mason)
