Duck stamp design

Benson, Frank Weston, 1862-1951 · 1942

At the request of Jay N. ("Ding") Darling, the artist who originated the concept of the Duck Stamp Program and designed the first stamp, Frank Benson had submitted a black and white wash painting of three canvasbacks, which was adapted for use on the second stamp, for which hunters and collectors paid $1. The income from these stamps was designated for conservation purposes. In 1942, Mr. Benson prevailed upon by Ed Thomas and Ralph Terrell, of the art and book department at Abercrombie and Fitch, a New York store that specialized in sporting goods, to produce an etching of his design for the 1935-36 Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp.
