David Low
Karsh, Yousuf, 1908-2002 · 1943
A philosopher disguised as a newspaper artist, David Low had made an intensive study of the cartoon as an art form and a political instrument. When I photographed him, he was chuckling over his private version of Lenin and the Russian Revolution. Low despaired and rejoiced in turns as he surveyed the human scene. Did he feel that the political cartoons from the First and Second World Wars molded public opinion? He replied, "A cartoon can be as influential as a poem, a speech, a text, a piece of music or an essay" (Karsh, 2003).
