Transcript of an interview with longtime Boston resident Fred Altman. The interview was part of the We are Boston: Stories of Hope, Struggle, and Resilience oral history project created in 2018 by poet and Boston artist-in-residence Daniel Johnson. Mr. Altman discusses his time serving as a staff sergeant in Normandy, France during World War II; his family’s immigration to the U.S.; living in Boston’s West End neighborhood and its history; his many entrepreneurial endeavors including a mail order zipper business, a retail store, foreign trade, and establishing trade centers and gift centers in New England; and advice for young entrepreneurs.
