On this episode of Report from Santa Fe, Edward Gonzales, Santa Fe Artist and Vietnam Veteran, discusses his concern for culture and family values. His interest in art was piqued during his early years when his grandmother bought him a comic book, and he copied the comic book illustrations. He describes his involvement in the Chicano movement at the University of New Mexico when his brother returned from Vietnam. Standards for literacy, reading, bilingualism, and education in Hispanic communities were lacking significant progress, so he started creating art that promoted literacy and family values in the home. Edward Gonzales illustrated Rudolfo Anaya’s children’s book, “Farolitos of Christmas,” as well as the sequel. He advises young people to think of themselves as people on a journey with a mission in life to do good. Children who read more become more successful in life.
