The print shows a former member of the National Guards contemplating with drooping shoulders the sculpture of his faded idol Louis-Philippe, sold by young Italian street vendors. None of his republican dreams have been fulfilled by his former idol. This was Daumier's second lithograph attacking Louis-Philippe directly. Aubert published several lithographs under the title CARICATURES POLITIQUES and published them as single prints. The title is usually written on the upper left margin. Some of the prints have never appeared in a newspaper, others have been published in the Charivari.
