Elymas the Sorcerer Struck with Blindness

Elymas, at left in a crowded forum attracts the attention of others as he staggers forward reaching out with both hands as he is struck with blindness. St Paul, at right, holds a book under his right arm and points towards Elymas. Sergius Paulus sits on a throne at the center of the composition. This print was made after a work by Renaissance artist Raphael, 1483-1520, which was used as a template for the creation of tapestries for the Sistine Chapel known collectively as the Raphael Cartoons. Podium inscribed in Latin: "L Sercius paullus asiae procos christianam fide amplectitur sauli predicatione", translates: "Lucius Sergius Paulus, Proconsul of Asia, embraces the Christian faith through the preaching of Paul."
