ROMAN MINIATURE OBJECT

A cast copper-alloy object which is probably a Roman votive axehead. Similar artefacts have been found in excavations at nearby Baldock in layers dated from the 2nd to 4th century AD (I.M.Stead and V.Rigby; 1986; pp.136). The blade is roughly trapezoidal in plan and decreases in width from the slightly damaged "cutting edge" towards the "attachment end". There is no socket or handle; instead, the attachment end takes the form of a three dimensional 'wedge-shaped' protrusion with a with a straight-sided vertical outer face.The surfaces of the object are corroded. It measures 19.8mm long, by 14.4mm high and 7.3mm thick; the weight is 2.3g.
