A Roman copper alloy miniature axehead dating to the period c. AD 43 - 410. The blade of the axe is triangular with rounded corners. It widens along its length froma width of 61.5mm at the butt to 10.8mm at the blade. The axehead is 1.15mm thick.The handle is rectangular in cross-section and measures 28.25mm in length, 4.85mm maximum width and is 0.8mm thick.Green (1981, 258) suggests that in a Romano-Celtic context, votive axes may have been good luck charms, although it should be remembered that interpreting their ritual function is difficult and this is just one possibility for their use.
