MEDIEVAL STRAP END

Incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval strap end. It is a two plate strapend with two circular rivets alligned along the midline of the plates to the top and bottom. The plates are tongue-shaped with a small flat knop projection from the bottom edge, the strap end has no further decoration. The two plates are riveted so that there is a narrow V-shaped space between the two with the lower rivet drawing the two plates together and the upper rivet also accomodating the now absent textile or leather strap.Parallels for this type of strap end can be seen in Egan & Pritchard's "Dress Accessories c.1150-1450", cf. figure 86 on page 133 - although these are more elaborate in decoration.Strapends of this type are dated, c.1300-1400.
