ROMAN BRACELET

Roman brass bracelet made of a single piece of circular sectioned wire. The end of the wire are overlapped and then each is wrapped around the main loop of the bracelet giving an adjustable catch. The ends taper from the point they start being wrapped around, one end is wrapped around eight times, the other nine. The bracelet has been bent almost in half and has a break to one side. It has a bright green patina with the metal showing through in places. Where it shows it has a golden appearence. There are stirations along the lengh of the wire suggesting it was made by drawing. The wire is 2.7mm in diameter and the bracelet is now 38.9mm by 57.6mm although the original diameter was probably close to 60mm. It weighs 12.39 grams.Crummy (1988) illustrates a very similar bracelet (page 39 no.1601) from a third century context in Colchester.
