An incomplete copper alloy Roman (AD c.75-c.175) trumpet derivative brooch (cf. Hattatt p330, Fig. 189 no. 1532), missing its spring, pin and top loop. Overall, the brooch measures 42mm long and 8mm wide. The head of the brooch is a flat roughly circular plate. From the reverse projects the pierced lug/s that would have held the pin in place. Iron traces are visible where the spring would have been held in place. From the top projects a lozengiform lug, which is probably the stump of a top loop.The bow projects from the front of the head and curves downwards quite sharply before straightening out and then recurving at the foot. A fin like protusion (similar to the one seen in Hattatt) projects from the centre of the obverse of the bow. The line drawing from the original paper record suggests that the bow is triangular or D-shaped in cross-section. The bow tapers from 8mm wide at the head to 3mm wide at the tip of the foot. The catch plate, which projects from the rear of the foot, appears incomplete in the line drawing.
