Carved Wood Leaf-Shaped Box

By carving this wooden box in the shape of a leaf, artist Ira Blount (1918-2020) pays homage to its natural origins, a tree. The box’s lid etches the leaf’s stem and veins in three-dimensional detail. Like a sandwich, the lid fits onto a curvelinear container with two equal layers, the upper in deep brown and the lower matching the lid's medium brown. A glossy stain finishes the vessel.
