Egg Basket with God's Eye

Wood splints and reeds are woven in a plain weave to create this egg basket. The handle is constructed with a plain weave and two reed wefts and attached to the rim with a God’s Eye design. Artist Ira Blount has a particular appreciation for egg baskets; in 2011 he told the journal, The Afro-American, that he is especially proud of his egg baskets because he enjoys the challenge of making an intricate design. He counsels others, “when learning something new, don’t think that you will just pick it up and go, it will take time…you have to work, work, work and practice, practice, practice and don’t give up.”
