J. R. Monfort & Company · 1888-1897
Owney received this leather tag from James A. Smith of El Paso, Texas. Smith served as the town’s postmaster from June 1890 to January 1894. The tag also bears the name of the maker, “J.R. Montford & Co.” also of El Paso. During Owney’s lifetime El Paso was a stop along the Southern and the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe railroads.
